Dr. Rizgar A. Mageed has
been a Professor of Experimental Immunology at the William Harvey Research
Institute, St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and
Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London since 2003. Professor
Mageed graduated from Baghdad University. He was awarded a PhD in
Immunology from the Royal London Hospital Medical School, Division of Medicine
at London University in 1985. He was appointed Research Fellow at the
Department of Immunology, University of Birmingham Medical School in 1984 where
he worked until 1990 and then joined the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology,
Imperial College-London as a Senior Scientist. In 1996, Professor Mageed was
appointed Senior Lecturer at Imperial College-London. Between September 1997
and September 1998, he was a Welcome Trust Visiting Professor at the
Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Stanford University School of
Medicine, Stanford, California, USA. In 2000, Professor Mageed was awarded an Arthritis
Research-UK Fellowship and appointed Senior Lecturer at the Center for
Rheumatology at University College London (UCL). Professor Mageed was made
Professor of Experimental Immunology in December 2002 and officially joined
Queen Mary University of London in May 2003. In 2009 Professor Mageed became a
Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) and in 2014 was awarded
an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in the United
Kingdom. Professor Mageed is an internationally-recognized Principal Investigator
in autoimmunity and an expert in the cellular, molecular and genetic aspects of
autoimmune rheumatic diseases with a major focus on B lymphocytes. He is the
author and joint author of and contributor to over 220 Journal Articles, Book
Chapters and Conference Presentations in Immunology and Autoimmunity. Professor
Mageed is a member of the British Society for Immunology (BSI) and the American
Association of Immunologists (AAI). He serves as a member of the Trustees
Committee of the American University of Iraq in Sulaimania. Since 2015
Professor Rizgar has also been country director of MDC-MedLabs medical
laboratories operations in Iraq where he oversees the implementation of
MDC-MedLabs laboratory business and scientific excellence in the region.
